RESTRICTED EXPANSE

Photographs have a capacity to "both reveal and conceal its meanings” (Clarke,G, 1948).
As someone who has moved from the country, I am both fascinated and deplored by urban and industrial settings. I often contemplate the before, the landscapes which are no longer in their most organic form. Past beauty which has been stamped by concrete.

When visiting places known for their natural, 'untouched' beauty, we don't expect our view to be obstructed.
Tasmania is known for its stunning landscapes, but in Hobart, we are greeted with a coastline guarded by both historical and contemporary products of industrialisation and colonisation.

In this series our view of the expanse is obscured. Landscapes you would preconceive as being green are stripped of life and colour. What lies behind these walls of metal?

With these photographs perhaps the semantics we associate with Tasmania are disillusioned. Is it naïve for us to look past the man-made? In a landscape gone grey what is our impact?
